About:
Shakopee Girls Basketball used the power of sport to unite its community for a meaningful cause during its annual Coaches vs. Cancer game, demonstrating that the impact of athletics extends far beyond the final score.
The event, held on Friday, January 30, brought together student-athletes, coaches, families, and community members in support of Lauren Hopper and the Hopper family. The night carried special significance for the Shakopee basketball community, as Lauren—the daughter of Shakopee head coach—continued her courageous fight against brain cancer. In a powerful show of unity, the program rallied around the family with the shared message: One Team. One Family. One Community. One Fight.
Fans were encouraged to show their support through multiple avenues, including purchasing event T-shirts and contributing to a gift basket raffle. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the Coaches vs. Cancer initiative were directed to support the Hopper family, reinforcing the community’s commitment to standing alongside them during this challenging time.
In addition, local businesses were invited to participate through sponsorship opportunities, with logos featured on the annual Coaches vs. Cancer T-shirts worn by Shakopee players, coaches, cheerleaders, and supporters. Donations were also accepted through checks, Venmo, and in-kind contributions, making it easy for the entire community to take part.
The Coaches vs. Cancer game served as a powerful reminder of what high school athletics can represent at their best—compassion, leadership, and collective action. Through this event, Shakopee Girls Basketball transformed a game night into a meaningful show of support, proving that when a community comes together, the impact can be far greater than any win or loss on the court.
