About:

Trunk or Treat is a really great event that Shawsheen has held for the last few years. It is a volunteer event put on by Angela Caira, one of Shawsheen’s guidance counselors, as well as lots of volunteers from the Shawsheen community. The cost to attend is $5 per child and the proceeds go to the Samaritans of the Merrimack Valley for Suicide Prevention. Teachers, coaches, staff, administrators, School Committee members, alumni, and many others, are among the volunteers. All volunteers decorate their trunk with a specific theme and dress up in Halloween costumes, and members of the community are able to come “Trunk or Treat” (a play on trick-or-treat) at every themed car for candy. Each kid is given a Trunk or Treat bag to put their candy in when they enter to fill up along the way. The event brings in kids of all ages, and is a great way to showcase Shawsheen’s support and involvement in the community. Bruno Brothers Pluming & HVAC Services is an extremely significant sponsor in the event every year, donating candy and bringing their fleet of 26 vans to add to the trunks. The owners of Bruno Bros are both former student athletes of Shawsheen who want to give back to the community.

This year, the Shawsheen Girls Basketball team had a trunk that was basketball themed where kids could come shoot on a hoop for candy. It was interactive and the kinds seemed to really enjoy themselves. As the head coach, I had asked a few of my players to come volunteer with me and they were so excited to be part of the whole day. It’s a great way to meet members of the community and interact with young future athletes who look up to our current players.

Many players on the team volunteered with different groups (National Honors Society, registration, etc.).
