About:
At SJP, hockey isn’t just about teamwork on the ice—it’s about making a difference off the ice too. Our Varsity and Freshman hockey teams are committed to giving back to the community, exemplifying the mission of SJP by helping others through their actions. Here’s how they’ve been making an impact:
Varsity Hockey: Leading by Example
1. Build-A-Bed Initiative
Before their first official practice, 14 returning varsity players joined 90 SJP students to participate in the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless’s Build-A-Bed program. Together, they constructed beds for children in need, working alongside students from grades 6-12. This initiative not only provided much-needed beds but also fostered collaboration and empathy among our players.
2. Supporting the 1st Lt. Derek Hines Soldiers’ Assistance Fund
Honoring SJP alumnus Derek Hines ’99, the varsity team participates annually in two key events:
- June 15, 2024: Players ran in the 2024 Flag Day 5K in Newburyport, Derek’s hometown, to raise funds and awareness for the Assistance Fund.
- February 15, 2025: The team will face Newburyport High School in the Derek Hines Memorial Hockey Game. Leading up to the game, players will raise funds to present to Derek’s family and the Assistance Fund. This tradition honors Derek’s legacy while supporting soldiers in need.
Freshman Hockey: A Heart for Service
For seven years, the SJP Freshman Hockey team has partnered with The Movement Family (TMF), a nonprofit in Lawrence, MA, dedicated to supporting homeless individuals. Founded by Michael Gorman, TMF provides meals, clothing, emotional support, and spiritual guidance to those in need.
Annual Community Service Project: January 15, 2025
The team will join TMF’s weekly “Street Dinner,” where they’ll serve meals and engage with the homeless community. Each player and their family will contribute by preparing a family-sized hot dish. Beyond serving, players will sit with guests to share stories and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by those experiencing homelessness.
This event is more than just a meal; it’s an opportunity for student-athletes to broaden their perspectives and practice gratitude. Many leave with a renewed sense of empathy and purpose, embodying the true spirit of SJP.
