Various acts of giving and kindness have been taking place across Baldwin Union Free School District (UFSD) this November.
Baldwin High School
This year, Baldwin High School embraced the Thanksgiving spirit of giving. Students with the local Kiwanis and Key Club chapter to deliver food baskets to Baldwin families in need. A “Jeans Day” raised funds that were used to purchase supermarket gift cards for members of the community.
Virtual Enterprise students planned a food drive in collaboration with Island Harvest. A collection box was placed in the main office and in addition to donating non-perishable items, they also volunteered and performed community service.
Baldwin Middle School
Students in Baldwin Middle School’s AVID program had their first annual Thanksgiving celebration this year. The 7th and 8th graders worked alongside staff mentors and enjoyed a potluck meal while giving thanks to what inspired them.
Led by Ann Marie Lynam, history teacher, students donated cold weather gear to “Soup to Nuts” soup kitchen in Freeport, is a non-profit, all volunteer run organization that services over 200 community members daily, in an effort to help their patrons prepare for the cold months ahead. They reached out to faculty and staff for coats, jackets, fleeces, vests, waterproof gear of any kind and snow boots for children and adults.
Brookside
Brookside held a Turkey Trot, in which every student donated a canned good to be delivered to a local food pantry.
Lenox
Lenox raised over $600 in a school-wide coin drive, which went to purchase gift cards for needy families. Students also celebrated with Thanksgiving-themed readings.
Meadow
Students at Meadow raised money for gift cards to donate to the Bethany House, which provides safe, supportive, emergency housing for women and children.
Plaza
Plaza participated in ‘Movember’ to help raise awareness for men’s health issues. They received more than $2100 in donations.
This year, New York State partnered with Walmart, Wegmans, the National Supermarket Association and the Community Service Society of New York to distribute turkeys and other foods statewide this Thanksgiving Week, delivering meals to feed more than 35,000 people statewide. Plaza picked up several turkeys provided by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s office to donate to Baldwin families.
Steele
Students and faculty of Steele gathered together in recognition of World Kindness Day during a schoolwide assembly. They learned about one tangible way the school community can work together to make a positive difference in our world. Through Hannah’s Socks, a community based non-profit organization dedicated to helping people affected by homelessness, poverty and domestic abuse in Ohio and Southeast Michigan, students collected new socks to be donated to those in need through shelter homes, public schools and direct distribution.
