About:
The Waltham High School Field Hockey team recently took on Malden Catholic at Yetten Field for their annual Pink Game, an event that went beyond the field to raise awareness for breast cancer and support a cause close to the team’s heart: Kesem. Kesem is a nonprofit organization that provides vital support to children coping with a parent’s cancer diagnosis.
This year’s Pink Game not only brought attention to breast cancer awareness but also included a heartfelt initiative to support Kesem through a bake sale. The decision to donate proceeds to this organization was a personal one for the Waltham Field Hockey program, as a teammate and others in the Waltham community have thrived from the support of Kesem.
Historically, the team has donated funds raised through bake sales directly to families within their community impacted by cancer, strengthening their connection to the cause. This year, the team focused on supporting an organization that is there for the children of those diagnosed. When a parent faces a cancer diagnosis, it’s not just the individual receiving life-changing news; the entire family is impacted. In 2021, one of the players received this difficult news about her parent. Through discovering Kesem, she, her sibling, and others in the community found a place to receive support during all stages of the journey.
In addition to the bake sale, the team also sold pink ribbon pins during the game, raising $800 for Kesem. These contributions will help the organization continue providing its invaluable services to children and families affected by cancer.
Waltham High School’s Pink Game served as a powerful reminder of the impact sports can have in uniting communities and supporting those in need. Through their efforts, the team not only raised awareness for the emotional impact cancer has on families but also extended hope to children navigating the challenges of a parent’s diagnosis, showing that their journey is one they don’t have to face alone.
