About:
Student-athletes at Ward Melville High School are once again proving that leadership goes far beyond the field, rallying their community to support families in need through their annual charity game initiative.
This year, the softball program has set its sights on supporting Ronald McDonald House Charities—a cause that holds deep local significance as a new house is being established right in their community in Stony Brook. Already, the team has raised more than $4,000 toward their ambitious $10,000 goal, fueled by a series of team-led bake sales and grassroots fundraising efforts involving players, families, and local supporters.
One recent bake sale alone brought in over $1,000, showcasing the dedication and organization of the student-athletes who took full ownership of the event. Their efforts will culminate in a special charity game on May 2, where fundraising will continue alongside a full day of family-friendly activities designed to bring the community together.
But this event is about more than just fundraising—it’s about tradition, resilience, and heart.
Now in its sixth year, the charity game began as a way to support a teammate whose mother was battling breast cancer. What started as a single act of compassion has grown into a lasting program legacy, with the team choosing a new charitable cause to support each year. That same team captain has since returned to the program as a JV coach, continuing to inspire the next generation and remaining deeply connected to the tradition she helped create.
Over the years, Ward Melville Softball has raised more than $30,000 for charitable organizations—an incredible testament to the program’s sustained commitment to service.
Recently, players had the opportunity to visit a Ronald McDonald House in New Hyde Park, where they spent meaningful time with children and families. In a touching exchange, the children signed visors that the players will wear during the game, while the team gifted signed softballs in return—creating a moment of connection that left a lasting impact on everyone involved.
The upcoming charity game promises to be a true community celebration. Attendees can expect an engaging atmosphere filled with activities like inflatable slides, face painting, cotton candy, popcorn, Italian ices, hair braiding, and appearances from costume characters—all designed to create a fun, welcoming environment while supporting an important cause.
With approximately 30–50 student-athletes actively involved, this initiative highlights the power of teamwork, empathy, and student-driven leadership. Ward Melville Softball continues to set the standard for what it means to be part of education-based athletics—using their platform not just to compete, but to make a meaningful difference.
As they prepare for May 2, one thing is clear: this team isn’t just playing a game—they’re changing lives.
