About:

the Waterloo Varsity team has hosted a Volley for a Cure tournament every year for over a decade.  Coach Kent started this event when she was the varsity coach.  We run concession stands, raffles, and collect donations.  The past 2 years, these monies have been donated directly to local community members battling cancer as well as Thrive to Survive, a local organization that supports those in cancer treatments in the 5 surrounding counties. (thrivetosurvive.org).

As we were unable to hold the Volley for a Cure tournament this past fall, our teams still wanted to find a way to support the cause and honor those near and dear to their hearts that have been impacted by cancer.  Before the game, each girl shared who they are playing for and we write their name on our wrists.  We decorated the gym and we collected donations at the door.  We also held a bottle/can drive in the fall to make an additional donation to Thrive. Each athlete was asked to collect cans and bottles from their family and friends.  They then just had to drop them off at a local store that counted them all for us.  Because of covid restrictions we couldn’t gather the team together to count them.  I would say each girl spent 1-2 hours collecting from family and friends.  We raised $300 from that can drive.

There at 12 girls on the varsity team and 15 on the JV team.  This year it was only for the length of the game, so about 2 hours for each team.  In a normal year it is about a 12 hour day to run the full event.
