About:
The Buffalo Bills reached out to programs here in Western New York and asked us to work with them to raise money for the American Cancer Society as part of the Crucial Catch league initiative. We volunteered by picking one of our home games and then promoting it as a program. It was supposed to be a challenge, or competition between schools, but we apparently were the only ones who agreed to help.
Joe Cantafio, a member of our coaching staff, purchased four colors of wristbands (for the types of cancer awareness) and had some of our JV and Varsity players selling them throughout the school day. We also worked with a couple local business partners, who generously donated t-shirts for the game that we sold, with all of the proceeds going to the fundraiser. We sold these first to players and their families, and then through our school bookstore.
From Coach Joe Cantafio:
All of our players 7-12 grade helped . Approximately 150.
We ran the fund raiser for the month. How many specific hours varied. Some students picked up wrist bands to sell multiple times, others just bought one.
We sold a Crucial Catch t shirt and wrist bands (four different colors to represent each type of cancer), they were able to put their names on a “football” that was hung outside of our book store with the name of the person they were donating in memory or honor of. They also did morning announcements. To have students wearing the wrist bands and t shirts raised awareness throughout the school community.
money and awareness for Breast Cancer and the American Cancer Society. When ACS approached all football teams in WNY to have one of these games, it was a natural fit. You have to raise a minimum of $1500, we raised over $3000 to place second in the nation. My hope is that more teams will do this in the future.
