About:

The University of the District of Columbia women’s basketball team recently completed two volunteer service projects for DC Special Olympics and Food & Friends.

First, on October 30th, the women’s basketball student-athletes volunteered at the Special Olympics DC 2013 Fall Sports Classic. There they supervised several local student-athletes, guiding them through basketball drills such as target passing, spot-shooting and dribbling.

Then on November 1st, the team volunteered at a local Food & Friends – an organization that provides home delivered meals to terminally ill residents in the Washington, DC Metro area. The team has been volunteering with this organization annually since the 2007-08 season, helping with everything from packaging meals for delivery, to unloading and sorting canned goods and food items for the kitchen. This year, the student-athletes even helped cut pies for the organization’s Thanksgiving Holiday Pie giveaway.

“Special Olympics and Food & Friends are both tremendous organizations to get involved in, and we feel the work we do for both is very meaningful and rewarding” head coach Lester Butler, Jr. said. “It’s a win-win, because it’s a great opportunity to give back to the community, and our team always has a blast.”
