Guilderland’s varsity softball team is taking their passion for the game off the field and into the heart of their community. This Saturday, during their home play day, the team will be collecting snack donations for Farnsworth Middle School’s backpack program—a vital initiative that helps provide food for students in need over weekends and school breaks.
The effort is led by varsity softball coach Mandy Yocono, who also teaches at Farnsworth Middle School. Inspired by the school’s ongoing food drives and the opportunity to make a greater impact, Coach Yocono saw the play day as the perfect moment to give back.
“Our team is fortunate,” Yocono shared. “We’re supported by the school for things like equipment and transportation. This was our way of giving back to a program that relies completely on donations—and directly benefits our peers and classmates.”
Working closely with the school counselors and social workers who run the backpack program, Coach Yocono learned that the greatest current need is for snacks. The team responded quickly by creating a flyer and spreading the word to fans and families planning to attend the weekend games.
Through this initiative, the Guilderland varsity softball team is doing more than playing ball—they’re building community, demonstrating empathy, and reminding everyone what it truly means to be a team.
