The Fourth Annual Football Food Drive, hosted by Supervisor Ed Smyth and The Ferro Foundation, once again demonstrated how powerful teamwork and community spirit can be.
This friendly competition between local high school football programs inspired student-athletes to go above and beyond in collecting food donations for area food banks. Each team showed incredible dedication, turning rivalries into a shared mission to help families in need.
Four Long Island high school teams participated in the event, collecting nonperishable food items outside local supermarkets:
• Harborfields Tornadoes at Greenlawn Farms, Greenlawn
• Huntington Blue Devils at Stop & Shop, Huntington
• John Glenn Knights at Stop & Shop, East Northport
• Northport Tigers at Stop & Shop, Northport
The team that collected the most donations earned a monetary prize from The Ferro Foundation, recognizing not only their effort on the field but their compassion off of it.
Organized by Huntington Town Supervisor Ed Smyth, Councilman Sal Ferro, and Director of Minority Affairs Kevin Thorbourne, the event was a collaboration between the Town of Huntington, The Ferro Foundation, and local high school athletic programs.
Councilman Ferro noted that the event had become one of his favorite traditions because it combined teamwork, friendly competition, and compassion for others. “When our young athletes channel their energy into giving back, they show what true leadership looks like both on and off the field,” he said.
Supervisor Smyth echoed this sentiment, adding, “The Football Food Drive is a great example of Huntington’s community spirit. Our student-athletes work hard all season, and seeing them dedicate that same drive to helping local families is something we can all be proud of.”
Community members supported the initiative by visiting the participating locations and donating food throughout the day. In total, the drive helped restock local food pantries and provide much-needed assistance to Huntington families facing food insecurity.
The Ferro Foundation continues to play a vital role in uplifting the community by partnering with organizations to provide resources and security to families in need. Together, these efforts reflect the true spirit of service, leadership, and teamwork that define both the athletes and the Huntington community.
