Memorial SCSJ club run/walk for social justice mission

April 5, 2021 By Team Up 4 Community Leave a Comment

The Memorial Junior High School commenced a new club this year through a run/walk kickoff event on March 23. The club, Students Committed to Social Justice, was initiated by Mrs. Laura Mesa and Memorial alumni Solomon Akaeze. Solomon serves as the club president and is currently a sophomore at Central High School.

The run/walk event came about through club discussions on various social justice topics, with the theme dubbed as “We ALL Run/Walk on EQUAL Ground.” This was also in honor of Ahmaud Arbery, who was killed doing his daily jog/run on Feb. 23, 2020. The students wore masks, were socially distant and ran or walked 2:23 miles around the Memorial track in his honor.

SCSJ is a club where students meet virtually (this school year) and have discussions regarding issues involving social injustices, social inequalities, ethnicity, race and other social topics. This is a safe space where students come to share experiences, beliefs and have discussions with their peers regarding these issues in a productive way.
