The Sachem North girls volleyball team came together for a truly meaningful match — one that celebrated the life and legacy of Matt “Dezy” DiStefano, a beloved former student-athlete, teacher, and coach at Sachem North High School.
After being diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2019, Matt founded the DezyStrong Foundation, dedicated to supporting others battling cancer while spreading his powerful message: “We Get To.” Each day is a gift — an opportunity to show up, give back, and make a positive impact in the world.
Before the game, Matt’s daughter Gianna shared heartfelt words about her father’s enduring legacy, joined by her sister Gulianna and cousins Avery and Jack. Avery Thurston, a freshman on the Sachem East girls volleyball team, also took part — showing how the “DezyStrong” spirit continues to connect communities across the district.
To mark the occasion, Sachem North athletes proudly wore custom DezyStrong jerseys, a reminder that every serve, set, and spike was played with purpose and gratitude.
This event wasn’t just about volleyball — it was about honoring a man whose strength, compassion, and belief in living each day to the fullest continues to inspire athletes, students, and families throughout Long Island and beyond.
