East Rockaway Volleyball “Digs Pink” for a Cause

 This week the East Rockaway volleyball program hosted our annual Dig Pink Fundraiser event – we decorated the gym and hallways, held a bake sale, had raffle baskets and the PTA ran a 50/50 raffle on our behalf.  Through this effort and donations from our spectators, we were able to raise $748 to donate to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which will be used for research and to provide financial assistance to women battling breast cancer. We were also informed that Bank of America has also pledged to quadruple our donation, making the grand total $2,992!  The volleyball community all over the country holds Dig Pink events throughout the year, with special emphasis throughout the month of October.

   This year was particularly important for our community. Our JV coach, Loreen Peknic, who has been with our program for 11 seasons, was diagnosed earlier this year with breast cancer and is currently undergoing her treatments.  She has been fearless in her fight, and all of the young women whose lives she has so positively impacted as a mentor, coach, and friend are standing alongside her to emphasize that No One Fights Alone.
