About:
Port Washington’s Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School recently hosted the Joan G Memorial Field Hockey Tournament, bringing together teams from across Nassau County for a day of competition, camaraderie, and community spirit.
In September 2002, the Nassau County Coaches Association lost a dear friend when Joan Grunebaum, longtime coach at Great Neck North, passed away suddenly. To honor her memory, a memorial charity tournament was established and has since become an annual event with 100% participation from Nassau County field hockey teams.
Thanks to Joan’s passion and the dedication of so many who continue this tradition, over $90,000 has been raised for charity. Each year, this tournament celebrates not only the sport of field hockey but also the kindness, leadership, and spirit Joan brought to the game and to everyone she coached.
A heartfelt thank-you goes out to all the teams, coaches, organizers, and families who make this event possible. You have given the Grunebaum family great joy in knowing that Joan’s spirit lives on through the athletes and communities she inspired.
