About:
The Beacon High School varsity girls basketball team recently stepped off the court and into the classroom to make a meaningful impact through literacy and mentorship.
During a special visit to South Avenue Elementary School, the student-athletes read to younger students, fostering a love of books and building positive connections across grade levels. The experience provided elementary students with role models they could look up to while also giving the varsity players an opportunity to lead through service.
The team shared stories, engaged in conversations about reading, and created an energetic and supportive atmosphere that made learning fun and memorable. Faculty members at South Avenue, including Ms. Amendola, helped organize the visit, making it a rewarding experience for both the young readers and the visiting student-athletes.
Community outreach efforts like this highlight how high school athletic programs can extend their impact beyond competition by promoting literacy, leadership, and mentorship. By giving their time and enthusiasm, the Beacon girls’ basketball team demonstrated the powerful role student-athletes can play in inspiring the next generation.
