About:
A junior at John F. Kennedy High School recently turned a personal connection into a meaningful opportunity to support the autism community, organizing a successful autism awareness fundraiser that raised more than $3,500 for the Autism Society of America Nassau Suffolk Chapter.
Inspired by her experiences as the older sister of a teenager with autism, Suhayla Uddin wanted to increase awareness and understanding while supporting programs that benefit individuals with autism and their families.
“Growing up with a sibling with autism has shaped much of my life,” Uddin said. “This journey for our family, and many others like us, has always been filled with ups and downs. I wanted to do something to bring awareness because autism is often misunderstood, judged, or overlooked.”
With support from Assistant Principal Dan Jantzen and the help of fellow students and friends, she organized the fundraising event, which drew strong community participation. The event featured food and refreshments from local vendors, including Tasty Taxi Food Truck and Dilly Dilly Donuts.
The fundraiser benefited the Autism Society of America Nassau Suffolk Chapter, an organization that helps make recreational activities and opportunities more accessible to individuals with autism.
“We wanted to support an organization that helps individuals with autism participate in activities they may not otherwise have access to,” she said.
The event raised approximately $3,500, exceeding expectations and demonstrating the generosity of the school and local community.
School officials commended the student’s leadership, compassion and commitment to making a difference.
The success of the fundraiser has inspired plans for future events aimed at promoting awareness, inclusion and support for individuals with autism and their families.
“We are so grateful for everyone’s support,” Uddin said. “It was a huge success, and we hope to do more events like this in the future.”
