For the second year in a row, the high school lacrosse program has played a vital role in supporting and developing young athletes through its youth program. The initiative is designed to create a strong connection between high school players and younger athletes, inspiring the next generation to follow in their footsteps. This mentorship not only strengthens the youth program but also provides high school athletes with leadership responsibilities, fostering personal growth and a deeper sense of community.
Last year, ten varsity players volunteered to lead the “Learn to Lax” program, a free clinic introducing young athletes to the game of lacrosse. Throughout the season, approximately 15 varsity players dedicated their time to assisting at youth practices, demonstrating drills, and helping with skill development. Their involvement extended beyond practices, as varsity and JV players played an essential role in the end-of-season youth tournament at Averill Park High School. Around 35 players contributed their time by officiating games, coaching, managing the concession stand, and serving as field marshals.
This year, the program has grown even stronger. Two “Learn to Lax” clinics have already taken place, with increased participation and 20 high school boys and girls stepping up to help. Additionally, high school athletes will be actively involved in practices throughout the season, as well as the year-end tournament. With nearly 500 volunteer hours dedicated last year, the program is on track to exceed that number, reinforcing its impact on both the high school and youth lacrosse communities.
By fostering mentorship and engagement, this initiative has not only enhanced skill development at the youth level but has also cultivated a passionate fan base for high school lacrosse. The bond between the programs continues to grow, ensuring a strong future for the sport in the community.
