Bellport High School’s student-athletes are leading the way in community service, demonstrating compassion and teamwork through the Ambassadors of Compassion initiative. Guided by their dedicated adviser, Eva Moriarty, these young athletes have embraced the opportunity to be role models both within their school and beyond.
The Ambassadors of Compassion, a national program, empowers student-athletes to mentor and inspire others through meaningful acts of service. This fall, Bellport’s teams embarked on several heartfelt projects that brought joy and support to people in need. The football and boys soccer teams expressed their gratitude to military personnel by writing touching letters to troops overseas as part of Operation Gratitude. Meanwhile, girls soccer and volleyball players wrapped boxes for the Birthday Wishes charity, ensuring that children facing hardships could experience the magic of a birthday celebration.
Reflecting on the program’s journey, Moriarty shared, “We began Ambassadors of Compassion last year. The thought behind this program is to get our student-athletes connecting with each other, being empathetic, empowering each other, and being role models in our community.” Initially, the plan was for each team to undertake the same project, but the students quickly took the lead, coming up with their own ideas and enthusiastically personalizing their contributions.
Last year’s efforts included making Christmas blankets for a local shelter, organizing a clothing drive for Lighthouse Mission, and holding bake sales that raised $300 for the Boys & Girls Club of Bellport. This year, Bellport’s student-athletes are already looking ahead to winter and spring with renewed excitement for new service projects.
Thank you to these young leaders for their dedication to compassion and service! Their work truly exemplifies the power of empathy, mentorship, and kindness
