Student-Athletes Volunteer at Via Marathon

September 8, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – 4am is not the typical wake-up time for most college student-athletes … but on Sunday September 7th Northampton student-athletes and coaches were up taking part in pre-race preparations for the Via Marathon.

Three groups of student-athletes were stationed at different points along the race course setting up various items, including a medical tent at the finish line in Easton, and hauling supplies and other necessities to the course.

Volunteering for the Via Marathon has become an annual event for Northampton student-athletes, dating back to the Fall of 2008. “It is actually something the student-athletes really enjoy,” commented Associate Athletic Director Adrian Yaguez, “I’m not sure they enjoy getting up, but once we get here and get working they take a lot of pride in what they are doing.”

Via of the Lehigh Valley is a non-profit human service agency that provides services for children and adults with disabilities like autism, cerebral palsy and Down syndrome. Serving the community since 1954, Via’s staff help individuals and families from birth through retirement focusing in Children’s Services, Employment, Community Connections, Autism Services, Teen Summer Experience and the Employment Reform Resource Project.

Tulane Student-Athletes Spend 734 Hours of Summer Performing Community Service

September 5, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

NEW ORLEANS – The numbers have been tallied and the hours have been counted. Over the course of the summer, Tulane’s student-athletes completed 734 total hours of community service at 17 events around the Greater New Orleans area.

Each Friday throughout the summer months, the Green Wave student-athletes took to the streets of New Orleans and the surrounding communities. It was part of a community-service initiative put in place by Tulane ASC senior academic counselor Charlotte Battiest and her team in order to instill those student-athletes still around during the summer with a sense of purpose and pride.

Coinciding with the community service events that hundreds of Green Wave student-athletes took part in over the last two months, many also spent time sitting in on lectures from guest speakers, learning important life skills from professionals in a variety of fields.

While Tulane’s student-athletes have always committed to spending time in the community whenever their studies and athletic schedules allow it, the effort put together by Battiest and her team was one of the finest ever seen by the Tulane athletic department.

“Overall, the summer programming, which consisted of Athlete Essentials 101 and 201 and community service events was phenomenal,” stated Battiest. “These programs have so much potential and we are expecting them to get better every year. A special thank you goes out to Wendy LeBlanc and Meredith Krall, who coordinated the AE 101 programming for freshmen. I’d also like to thank the Executive Staff members who assisted Israel Route and I with coordinating AE 201 for upperclassmen. Also, thank you to Sue Bower, Caroline Thornton, and Israel Route for their hard work coordinating the community service projects. Finally, I would like to thank Rick Dickson for supporting the vision of Tulane Athletics and its partnership with the university’s mission. The programming was successful and we look forward to doing it again next year.”

Over the course of the summer, hundreds of Tulane student-athletes spent countless hours performing community service with a variety of local non-profit organizations, such as KIPP Believe, the Second Harvest Food Bank, the Tulane Cancer Center, the NFL Youth Education Town, the New Orleans Museum of Art, Bridge/Grace House, Youth Rebuilding New Orleans, Children’s Hospital New Orleans, Green Light New Orleans, the St. Paul’s Homecoming Center. Some Tulane student-athletes even participated in community service on and around Tulane’s Uptown campus. The Green Wave student-athletes wrapped up their summer by holding a health and wellness fair on the LBC Quad for many of the campers and children they visited with in the community throughout the summer.

Big South Community Corner

September 5, 2014 By Team Up 4 Community

Prior to the start of the 2014-15 academic year, Big South student-athletes, coaches and administrators continued their involvement with the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” by spending time and serving their communities in a variety of ways. Below is a closer look at these efforts.

Charleston Southern Volleyball Volunteers at Lowcountry Food Bank
The Charleston Southern volleyball team took time out of their preseason schedule to volunteer at the Lowcountry Food Bank August 13. The Bucs helped the organization pack food into backpacks and make boxes for distribution throughout the Lowcountry.

The Bucs primarily helped in the process of packing and loading bags for the Lowcountry Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies program, which provides nutritious, high quality food and easy-to-prepare meals for children at risk for weekend hunger.

CSU also spent time packing, moving and loading boxes that the Food Bank distributes throughout the community to schools and churches. These boxes are used for various programs including the Kids Café and the School Pantry programs throughout the Lowcountry.

Liberty Student-Athletes Take Part in Character Camp

Liberty student-athletes, coaches and staff came together in July to bring summer camp to local elementary school students in the Lynchburg area.

An organization known as Dream Again Life, along with Liberty’s Academic Affairs Office, held its annual “Keeping it Moving with Character Camp” for Heritage Elementary School. Held on Liberty’s campus for the first time since its inception, the camp gave local area youth the opportunity to experience the university’s athletics facilities through a number of interactive stations.

Campers bounced around from station to station, learning techniques about football, soccer and track, while also taking part in other games and team building activities. On the final day of the three-day event, campers were treated to a carnival and kick ball game at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
