On September 11, 2001, the world was forever changed. The tragic terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the courageous actions aboard Flight 93 claimed nearly 3,000 lives, leaving an indelible mark on the nation and the world. The victims of that day were more than just numbers—they were sons, daughters, parents, friends, and colleagues. In remembrance, Lynbrook Football has taken a moment to honor the lives lost and extend gratitude to the first responders who bravely answered the call and continue to serve selflessly every day.

At a recent game, the Lynbrook Football Program paid tribute to the fallen and the local first responders. In a powerful display of unity, each player carried a flag, symbolizing the collective memory of 9/11 and the community’s appreciation for the first responders who continue to protect and serve. This tribute was a heartfelt reminder to never forget the sacrifices made and to honor those who work tirelessly to keep us safe.

Lynbrook Football extends a special thanks to Lynbrook alumni and Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder for his continued support of the Lynbrook community and Long Island as a whole. Additional gratitude goes to Chief Brian Palladino and the Lynbrook Police Department, Chief Scott Bien and the Lynbrook Fire Department, and Jay Neats from Northwell Health along with Michael Caldwell of 1st Central Savings Bank, who generously donated the tribute jerseys worn by the team in honor of Lynbrook’s first responders.

The event was made even more meaningful by Lynbrook’s own Daniel O’Grady and the NCPD Emerald Society Bagpipes, who led the team onto the field with a stirring performance that added to the significance of the day.

Lynbrook Football remains committed to honoring the past and thanking those who continue to protect the community, standing united in appreciation for all who serve.

Northport High School was proud to host the annual Town of Huntington “Army vs. Navy” Football game, an event that honors our nation’s veterans and celebrates the spirit of community. Organized in collaboration with Huntington Supervisor Ed Smythe, this year’s game coincided with Northport’s own “Salute to Veterans,” a theme that made the day especially meaningful.

In partnership with the Town of Huntington, Northport Athletics paid tribute to local veterans through multiple heartfelt gestures. Veterans’ names were proudly listed in the game’s program, special announcements honored their service, and dignitaries attended to celebrate these hometown heroes. A dedicated area on the field allowed veterans to enjoy the game together, complete with refreshments and camaraderie, creating a truly memorable experience for all.

The day also honored Fred Amore, a Vietnam War veteran and long-serving Commander of VFW #9263 of Elwood/Commack. Amore’s decades of service and dedication to veterans left a lasting impact on the community, and his leadership in improving Canon Park and serving on the Huntington Veterans Advisory Board were just a few of his many contributions. Though Fred passed away in 2022 due to complications from COVID-19, his legacy continues to inspire the community. The event’s winning team received the prestigious Town of Huntington Fred Amore Memorial Trophy, a tribute to his commitment and sacrifice.

Representing the U.S. Navy at the game was U.S. Congressman and Navy Veteran Nick LaLota, while Major General Anthony R. Kropp, a Huntington native, represented the U.S. Army. Veterans from multiple wars, high-ranking military personnel, and recruiters were all present, making the game a powerful reminder of the strength and unity of our armed forces.

The game was not just a competitive match between Northport Tigers (Navy) and Huntington Blue Devils (Army), but a celebration of fair play, respect, and solidarity for our military. The day also included a ceremonial coin toss, a patriotic half-time performance by the Northport Marching Band, and an unforgettable presentation of the Nation’s colors by the Huntington Veterans Advisory Board.

As the day concluded with Supervisor Smyth presenting the Army/Navy Veteran Memorial Trophy, the entire community felt a deep sense of gratitude for the service and sacrifices of our veterans. Northport High School, the Town of Huntington, and the participating schools were honored to be part of such a meaningful event.

We eagerly await what 2025 will bring, as this tradition continues to grow and inspire our community to come together in honor of our military heroes.

Throughout the day on Sept. 11, students from the East Meadow School District took time to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Each building recognized the 23rd anniversary of the day with age-appropriate conversations and activities. 

At the Salisbury School, Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Rosner, board of education trustees and district administrators held a flag-raising ceremony to reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Additionally, American Legion Post 1082 Past Post Commander Pete Wenninger delivered a speech to reflect on the veterans and first responders who fought to protect the country’s freedom.

At Bowling Green Elementary School, students crafted ribbons, they created their own books, and they colored American flags in recognition of Patriot Day. Students also discussed heroes and how they can show gratitude to those who act heroically in their own community.

At Parkway Elementary School, students also colored American flags and talked about things they love about their country. Parkway teacher Mrs. Pepe shared her father’s firefighter helmet with her class. Her father was among the first responders on Sept. 11, 2001.

Barnum Woods Elementary School students wore red, white and blue to demonstrate their respect and appreciation for the country. They also held a remembrance ceremony at the school’s entrance in which members of the Student Council gave speeches to reflect on Sept. 11, 2001. Barnum Woods Principal Amanda Sagnelli and Assistant Principal Harriet Alfano also gave speeches, urging students and teachers to never forget.

At East Meadow High School, the social studies department crafted lesson plans to teach students about the events of Sept. 11, 2001 and how it changed the world. During the day, teachers led students through the newly designed history wing, where the names of all of those who tragically passed were displayed on the walls. Students then visited the school’s 9/11 memorial, consisting of two trees to signify the Twin Towers, as well as a small piece of the World Trade Center. American flags were planted in the memorial and all staff were provided with American flag pins to stand in unity of remembrance. 

At W.T. Clarke Middle School and W.T. Clarke High School, ELA & social studies classes learned about the events of Sept. 11, 2001 through journaling, discussion, exploring excerpts and focusing on ways they can have a positive impact through acts of kindness.

Woodhull School students had the incredible honor of leading the Pledge of Allegiance at Fire Island National Seashore’s inaugural naturalization ceremony. Held at the picturesque Fire Island Lighthouse on Sept. 11, this special event marked the 60th anniversary of the park’s establishment, originally signed into law during Lyndon B. Johnson’s presidency. It was a powerful moment, set against the backdrop of the historic lighthouse, as 69 individuals from all walks of life became American citizens.

The Fire Island School District students displayed tremendous leadership and patriotism, guiding new citizens in the Pledge of Allegiance with poise and pride. Following the ceremony, the students gifted each new citizen an American flag as a personal token of welcome and congratulations. Their warm smiles and thoughtful gesture helped make this once-in-a-lifetime event even more memorable for everyone involved. 

Superintendent of Schools Travis Davey congratulated the students for representing Woodhull School with such grace and respect. “Their participation in this significant event is a true reflection of values we cultivate at Woodhull – patriotism, kindness and service to others,” Mr. Davey said. “We hope this was a day the students will never forget, and the district is honored to have been a part of it.”
