The Cold Spring Harbor Central School District’s first districtwide charity event sports night for students, staff, families and community residents was a huge success and a night to remember.
The event brought to life a vision of Superintendent of Schools Jill M. Gierasch and a priority goal of the board of education to build upon the existing partnerships between the schools, families and the community. Looking ahead, it is the district’s hope to hold an annual charity event to continue to support these important partnerships.
“I cannot express my appreciation enough. There are no words to describe how incredible it is to see our staff and community come together to show their support of our schools and our first annual districtwide charity event,” Gierasch said. “Our staff and families serve as role models for our students who will one day become leaders in their own communities.”
The sold-out fundraising event, held in the Ralph Whitney Field House, was in remembrance of Corey Phelan, son of Cold Spring Harbor High School physical education and health teacher, Chris Phelan, who lost his battle to T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia on Oct. 12, 2022. Corey had a vision to help families suffering the same fate by offsetting their financial burden so that they could dedicate and focus more time on their children.
Director of Athletics, Health and Physical Education Michael Bongino served as the MC, while the staff from each of the district’s school, wearing their school colors competed in games of skill and strength. The friendly, yet fierce, competition included dance skits, egg toss relays, scooter races, tug of war and more. Everywhere, students were holding up signs and cheering for their teachers. While each school competed for the coveted trophy, in the end Goosehill Primary School was declared victorious. A live DJ and food added to the excitement and fun.
Not surprisingly, more than $11,000 was raised which will help benefit those suffering from T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Chis Phelan and his wife, Chris Phelan, expressed their appreciation to all who made the event so successful and memorable.
This sporting event and fundraiser joined previous K-12 special events including the district’s fall homecoming game half-time and pre-game carnival, the district’s first districtwide STEAM Night and Parent University Night.
