The East Rockaway High School Volleyball program once again showcased the power of teamwork and compassion through its annual Dig Pink Fundraiser, held this week in support of the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
The team transformed the gym and hallways with pink decorations, hosted a bake sale, offered raffle baskets, and partnered with the PTA, which ran a 50/50 raffle on the program’s behalf. Through the generosity of spectators and the community, the event raised an impressive $748 to support breast cancer research and financial assistance programs for women battling the disease.
In a powerful show of solidarity, Bank of America pledged to quadruple the team’s donation, bringing the grand total to $2,992 — amplifying the impact of the athletes’ efforts and the community’s kindness.
Dig Pink events have become a cherished tradition across the volleyball community nationwide, especially throughout the month of October, serving as a reminder of how sports can unite people behind a shared cause.
This year’s fundraiser held special meaning for the East Rockaway community. JV Coach Loreen Peknic, who has been part of the program for 11 seasons, was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year and is currently undergoing treatment. Her strength, courage, and unwavering positivity have inspired every player in the program.
Standing proudly beside their coach, the team dedicated this year’s event to her fight — and to the message that no one fights alone.
Congratulations to East Rockaway Volleyball for turning passion into purpose and proving once again that when athletes team up for a cause, the impact reaches far beyond the court.
