About:
Every year, the boys’ and girls’ hockey teams come together to assist the town by conducting a fall cleanup of the leaves at the Standish Burial Ground. This historical cemetery holds the distinction of being the oldest maintained burial ground in the United States. Our boys’ and girls’ teams arrive equipped with rakes and leaf blowers to gather the leaves into large piles, facilitating the town’s subsequent use of machinery for leaf collection.
Due to the age and fragility of the monuments and grave stones, it is more practical to manually rake and blow the leaves into piles, preventing any potential damage that might occur if heavy machinery were used, as these machines are too large to navigate safely around the site.
The teams wholeheartedly embrace this task as it not only serves as a meaningful bonding experience for the teams but also allows them to contribute positively to their community.
