About:
To help earn their Bronze Award, Rocky Point Middle School sixth-graders and Girl Scout Troop 2289 members Samantha Amalfitano, Lilyanna Astarita, Felicity Monaghan and Rachel Versheck crafted a student bench for their school building.
Using nearly $200 that they raised by collecting and exchanging recyclable bottles, the students labored throughout the summer to complete the project. They worked collaboratively as they learned how to use power tools, sand, stain and varnish the wood. The bench and several decorative flowerpots were placed outside the cafeteria at the end of September.
The students hope that the completed project will provide their peers, especially those on medical restrictions, with a comfortable place to sit outside during lunchtime and inspire others to give back to the community.
