About:
East Broadway Elementary School students in Shoshanna D’Antonio, Robert Galino and Colleen Menard classes are learning valuable social and emotional skills while also giving back. The students, who are part of the school’s applied behavioral analysis program, facilitate cart sales, along with coffee and teas sales in the school’s new Broadway Bistro. Both allow students to strengthen their social skills within the school community in a unique way while learning money management.
Each month, the students walk the hallways with their cart and sell various snacks and other items to students and staff. The Broadway Bistro is a new location in the school where students build their leadership skills as they learn how to make coffee and tea and deliver the beverages to staff members who in turn, provide a donation.
According to D’Antonio, Galino and Menard, the Broadway Bistro has been a fantastic opportunity for all participants, specifically for building friendships, teaching hands on learning experiences, and most importantly, real world social interactions. The students look forward to Friday mornings when they can apply the skills they have acquired and make every second count at East Broadway.
During the month of April, in honor of Autism Awareness Month, the students raised $300 for the Nassau-Suffolk Autism Society of America with their cart sale. This allowed them to not only raise awareness but to give back to the Long Island community. Teachers and teacher aides assist the students, both with the cart and at the bistro.
In addition, East Broadway’s fifth grade peer mentors play an important role in the lives of the ABA classes. These students volunteer their time during their lunch periods to work with the students in the ABA program. As a sign of appreciation, the peer mentors will be going on a trip at the end of the year to Adventureland.
