About:
To help local veterans in need, the Miller Avenue and Wading River schools and student athletes have teamed up to hold a food drive as part of a Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP of Riverhead initiative.
The food drive started on Sept. 23 and will run until Nov. 13. Thanks to the generosity of both school communities, several boxes have already been filled with nonperishable goods and toiletries.
All donations will be transferred to the Veterans of Foreign Wars and AARP and subsequently delivered directly to Long Island veterans who are in need.
Also, To help community members in need and demonstrate the importance of civic responsibility, students in Kevin O’Handley’s Participation in Government class are collecting food and clothing for local veterans.
Since Nov. 1, the students have been making and hanging posters throughout the high school in an effort to garner support from their peers to fill boxes with food and clothing.
The drive, which will run until the end of November, is being held in conjunction with the Rocky Point VFW Post 6249 and Riverhead AARP branch.
In addition to the food and clothing drive, the students plan to host two blood drives this year, as well as a collection for holiday toys.
