About:
The Kindness Club at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has a wide reach in its desire to spread goodwill. For Thanksgiving, the club hosted a food drive to benefit families throughout Long Island.
Large bins were placed in the lobby during the week of Nov. 16-20, and each grade was assigned different items to bring in to ensure that everyone would receive all the necessary components of a Thanksgiving meal. After school, Kindness Club members filled large paper bags with canned fruits and vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy, mashed potatoes, pie filling, stuffing and more.
Before the bags were filled, they were decorated with pictures and Thanksgiving messages by students in Kim Kelly’s, Lauren Marocchi’s and Victoria Nemes’ classes. Heather Comparetto, Birch Lane’s occupational therapist, then delivered all of the food packages to Long Island Cares, which runs the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
