About:

Island Park’s Francis X. Hegarty Elementary School held its annual Winners Walk, organized by the Student Council (which includes student athletes) in collaboration with the physical education department, on Oct. 28. This year’s event was especially meaningful in that it benefitted Island Harvest, an organization that provided support and necessities to the Island Park community for the 2012-2013 school year following Superstorm Sandy.

Despite being relocated from the outdoor field into the gymnasium due to weather conditions, the Winners Walk proved to be a success. Classes from each grade had an opportunity to run or walk laps around the gym, which was lined by motivational posters and signs that promoted the initiative. Physical Education teachers Annie Bennet-Neglia and Dominick Barone led the way and encouraged the students to keep moving forward.

Almost four years ago, Island Harvest joined forces with local schools and volunteers in order to provide food, toiletries and other items to those in Island Park who were affected by the storm. The money that Hegarty receives through Winners Walk sponsor pledges will serve as a way for the district to give back and express gratitude for the invaluable outreach during difficult times. Under the direction of teachers, Patricia Pozin and Denise Benedetto, Student Council members helped to spread the word to their families and friends.
The contributions will go toward programs and efforts to end hunger. Island Harvest Volunteer Dr. Ellen Waldman joined those at Hegarty, along with Superintendent of Schools Dr. Rosmarie Bovino and Board of Education President Jack Vobis, for this special occasion.
