About:
Horseheads and Elmira have been doing Hoop For a Cure for about four years now.
Rivals on the court, we play two league games against one another each year. Both teams have had their programs affected by diabetes or juvenile diabetes. So, we make up shirts each year, which the kids wear to school and for warm-ups. Prior to the game, we let the audience know why we are recognizing this disease. Elmira has had a couple players and parents that had diabetes. At Horseheads, three players have had to deal with juvenile diabetes.
We sell shirts at the games, with all profits going towards the JDRF fund, and we also have a table for donations. Each year, whatever we combine to take in, we go to the JDRF walk in May, held at Elmira College, and donate a check on behalf of Horseheads and Elmira Girls Basketball.
A’Don Allen is the head coach at Elmira, and he has spearheaded this event and it’s been a great thing for the area, and raising money for a very worthy cause.
“We have raised almost $600 this year. We began this about 5 years ago when the father of one of our players passed away due to complications to Type 1 diabetes. We joined forces after the first year and it’s been a fantastic experience since. “-
