About:
At Needham High School there are 57 athletes across 3 field hockey teams; Varsity, JV 1 and JV 2. All 57 athletes participated in this clinic! The high school players helped by running drills; leading fun relay races as well as creating some fun team bonding activities. The high school players set up small 6 v 6 scrimmage teams and even got in and played with the younger players during the scrimmages; which the younger players really love! Additionally the high school girls demonstrated things such as corners, penalty strokes etc.
The clinic itself runs for 90 minutes, however the high school players were there for 2 hours as they helped with setup and breakdown.
The older girls chose to help because they love being role models to the younger players, they love teaching the game of field hockey and they also love to instill their own love for the sport in the younger players. The older girls do an awesome job of keeping the younger players engaged while also showing them what field hockey is like at the high school level. I have found that the youth players really enjoy when the high school players coach them; they admire and look up to the older girls so much that I often see youth players on our sidelines watching the highschool games! For me, as a coach of both levels, I see that this collaboration builds up confidence for both age groups, shows the importance of community all while sharing the combined love they all have for the sport. It’s a win- win all around!
