About:
Sailors Supporting Sailors is a club at Hendrick Hudson High School which focuses on talking about mental health issues that our student-athletes face as well as working to eliminate the stigma around mental health.
The club is made up of student-athletes from all the teams at Hen Hud. There are approximately 20-25 student-athletes who attend each meeting.
The club started in Spring 2022 and meets at least once a month, but regularly twice a month. We talk about how they are feeling, what is stressing them, and discuss ways to help them deal with that stress.
Each month they create a Mental Health Booster calendar that has a suggestion of an activity per day for everyone to try to do to help deal with stress and/or improve their mental health.
The club hosted Mental Health Awareness games on February 4, 2023 during varsity boys and girls basketball games. There was a table with information about the two foundations that we promote, 15 for Life foundation and the harris project – CODA. There was a baked sale to raise money for the club and future activities.
15 for Life and the harris project – CODA were chosen because of their mission to reduce the stigma towards mental health. Hen Hud and the varsity boys and girls lacrosse programs were chosen to be an inaugural ambassador for 15 for Life in the Spring 2022. The harris project – CODA works to bring awareness to co-occurring disorders and focuses on creating links between peers/staff. Both these foundations are a part of bringing mental health awareness to our student athletes
Recently a girls lacrosse player applied and was approved to become a Morgan’s Message ambassador. As with 15 for Life, Morgan’s Message has taken a tragedy and created a foundation that works to decrease the stigma about mental health.
This spring the club hosted Mental Health Awareness Lacrosse games on April 15th for the boys and girls lacrosse teams. Teams have stickers for all three foundations on their helmets/sticks. A table provided information about mental health and stickers were available.
T-shirts were also sold. Mental Health facts were announced throughout the game. (picture attached)
The girls lacrosse team had a Morgan’s Message dedication game on April 19th. The girls wore t-shirts promoting Morgan’s Message.
Other activities that the student-athletes have participated in is the CODA Youth Summit on March 29th.
They will also be working with the Student-Assistance counselor to have
The club will be working to have more Mental Health Awareness games for the spring as well as the upcoming year.
