About:
The Nassau Chapter of the New York State Association of School Business Officials (NASBO) and Long Island Blue Star Moms joined forces to pay it forward this holiday season through a Military Care Package Assembly effort.
On Nov. 30, approximately 33 representatives from both groups gathered at VFW Post 5253 in Albertson, where they assembled boxes of donated items. Their mission was to lift the spirits of deployed troops by bringing hope and encouragement through sending care packages.
The volunteers prepared 145 care packages for delivery to servicemen and servicewomen overseas. They filled each box with snacks, hygiene items and hope, along with letters written by local children. Contents, funded via individual NASBO member contributions as well as many business associates, ranged from Converse t-shirt and socks to toothbrushes and pens, from granola bars and trail mix to playing cards and handmade gifts from students.
The Herricks Public Schools played a valuable role in this initiative. Under the guidance of Herricks High School Assistant Principal Bryan Hodge, Director of Music and Performing Arts Anissa Arnold, and high school English teacher Michael Stein, various student clubs provided letters, handmade ornaments, paper poppy flowers and other special mementos for the troops.
