About:
I chose to collect the sports equipment because as someone who has been actively involved in sports throughout my childhood and now as a High School Varsity Baseball player, I’ve experienced the positive impact that participating in sports can have on a young person’s life. It has taught me the value of hard work, discipline and perseverance. These experiences have encouraged me to want to help kids that haven’t been as fortunate as I have been.
I started the process by contacting Mr. Degennaro and getting his permission to have a donation box in the school lobby. I promoted the fundraiser on social media and had friends and family spread the word. I kept a box outside my home and people dropped off new and gently used sports equipment – bats, gloves, lacrosse sticks, soccer balls, basketballs, cleats. People were very generous.
I spent a total of about 20-25 hours on the project including picking up donations, promoting the fundraiser, sorting the equipment, and delivering the items. I am grateful for this opportunity and am humbled by how much of an impact this will have on the kids.
I have attached a picture of me and Mr. Armando Pena, of the Little League Raiders Baseball in the Bronx, on the day of the drop-off. My plan is to continue to help this community with other fundraisers in the future. — Luca Massillo
