About:
Last year, in collaboration with the track and field team, St. Mary’s High School embarked on a marathon to support the Martin Richard Foundation. Inspired by the book “Stronger” by Jeff Bauman, assigned as summer reading by the English department, the idea took root.
“Stronger” chronicles the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, Bauman’s journey of recovery, and his pivotal role in the subsequent investigation. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the tragic event, St. Mary’s initiated their own marathon fundraiser, spearheaded by English teacher Stacy Drector and track coach Tristan Smith. Surpassing expectations, the students raised over $4,000 for the foundation.
Encouraged by the success of the previous year, Drector and Smith are thrilled to make this an annual tradition. Reflecting on the event, Drector shared, “Last year, everyone was not just running but also mingling and having a great time. It was heartwarming to witness the enthusiasm, especially since it was our first time organizing such an event.”
This year, St. Mary’s has chosen to support My Brother’s Table, a local organization in Lynn. The decision arose from the school’s commitment to serving its community. Established in 1982, My Brother’s Table is a vital resource, having served over 3.9 million meals to those in need since 2020.
Partnering with My Brother’s Table aligns with St. Mary’s ongoing efforts in community service. Smith, who has volunteered at the organization in the past, expressed admiration for its inclusive approach and unwavering dedication to helping individuals in need.
The marathon, held on April 4th, saw participation from over 120 student-athletes, collectively covering 56 miles throughout the school premises. Despite adverse weather conditions, the athletes demonstrated resilience, adapting the event to an indoor course.
Donations, received both per lap and as straight contributions, poured in as the athletes circled the track. Every lap marked a step towards their fundraising goal, with the team’s spirit remaining high throughout the event.
Andreas Roumeliotis, one of the participants, shared his perspective on the event, emphasizing the importance of giving back to the local community.
As the runners passed the baton and continued their laps, the camaraderie among the students was palpable. Coach Smith’s call for additional runners to surpass their goal exemplified the team’s dedication to the cause.
The fundraiser will continue for another week, with hopes of surpassing their previous record. For Smith and the participants, the marathon isn’t just about covering miles; it’s a testament to the school’s ethos of community engagement and support for those in need.
