Students from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently volunteered at the Brookside School to assist the Bellmore Kiwanis Club with a holiday mission.
After a donation drive within the district, student volunteers gathered on Dec. 12, 13 and 16 to organize food to help the Kiwanis Club create baskets for families in need.
“The families receive food and presents for the children,” explained Catrina Christensen, school counselor and coordinator of the Twilight Program at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program. “There were probably 2 to 3,000 items donated.”
The Kiwanis then donates leftover food to the district’s food pantry, the Community Cupboard.
“By performing these acts, students learn the importance of helping families in need, the importance of community and collaboration,” added Christensen.
