About:
Fresno Pacific Department of Athletics is dedicated to providing opportunities for student-athletes to serve both the campus and surrounding community. Our teams as well as individual student-athletes are enthusiastic about making meaningful contributions to society by working with local charities, community organizations and schools. During the fall 2013 semester, the student-athletes and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) volunteered more than 1,000 hours in addition to their scholastic work and athletic demands.
Keep Youth Journeying Onward (KYJO)
The women’s basketball program took time to help KYJO which is a non-profit organization focused on helping at-risk youth succeed despite coming from underprivileged backgrounds. The team spent over 100 hours assisting in the Second Annual KYJO BBQ Cook-Off that is a major fundraising event for the organization.
Local Schools
The baseball team alone spent more than 200 hours over the course of the year working with students who have disabilities at a local high school. Men’s basketball had student-athletes travel to local middle schools to provide positive life-skills building exercises.
Community Food Bank
The SAAC hosted food drives for the local Community Food Bank in the months of September and November during multiple soccer, volleyball and basketball games, where attendees of the game were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to gain admission to the events. Nearly one hundred pounds of food were collected and distributed to families in need throughout the Fresno area.
Swimming and diving, cross country along with track and field student-athletes volunteered time to assist the Community Food Bank with packing and sorting donations for distribution. The volleyball team took a Friday morning to spend time distributing food with Butler Church.
Make-A-Wish Foundation
Fresno Pacific continues to contribute to the NCAA Division II’s fundraising efforts for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. During the fall semester the SAAC was able to raise $2,500 through various campaigns. They repeated last year’s successful ‘Penny Wars’ event in addition to taking donations at home sporting events instead of ticketed admission to spectators.
NCAA Division II began its partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation in 2003 and since then member institutions have raised in excess of $2.4 million to support the Make-A-Wish mission.
Toys for Tots
Fresno Pacific works in partnership with the United Way of Fresno County and the U.S. Marine Corps to collect toys for the Toys for Tots Foundation. Over 100 toys were collected by FPU’s SAAC on the December 7th basketball games against Dixie State. This year the United Way of Fresno County was able to give out more than 85,000 new toys to less fortunate children from across the Valley during the Christmas season.
On March 22nd FPU’s SAAC will be hosting Sunbird Sports Day from 1-3 p.m. on campus, this event will be open to youth throughout the local community.
