About:
We love this time of year and fundraising for the Power of Pink Volleyball Tournament is one of our favorite activities as it brings us (athletes, parents, peers, athe HF school and the local community) together for a great cause. Cancer, very sadly, has directly impacted and touched the lives of many in our small close knit local communities. While the Power of Pink proceeds are to benefit breast cancer and continue research in that area, we very sadly have been devastated by childhood cancer in Hudson Falls.
The Why behind What we do:
2002 – Kathleen “Beaner” Traver was taken from us way too soon. Just when she was beginning her Volleyball career as a player of mine on the Junior Varsity volleyball team at Fort Edward High School. Beanerr has cousins that currently play on our Hudson Falls Varsity Volleyball Team and so many others that choose to remember her and her love of sports. Beaner was only 14 years old when she “got her angel wings”.
2019 – Our Hudson Falls Junior Varsity Volleyball Coach, Karen Markey (aka “Muffin”) was dx w/ breast cancer and we rallied our fundraising efforts in honor of her fight.
2021 – One of our Hudson Falls Varsity volleyball players lost her little sister to cancer. Mia Nassivera was also only 14 yrs old when she “got her angel wings”. Many of Mia’s friends and classmates continue to honor her life through many of our events and activities. Mia’s childhood best friend is a senior this year on our HF Varsity VB team
2023 – The Hudson Falls community again lost a friend, classmate, and community member to cancer at the young age of 12. Christopher Goodness “got his angel wings” and we honor him as well in our thoughts and efforts.
2023 Fundraising Efforts –
Athletes at all levels of the program (Varsity, JV & modified) contribute – we have about 45-50 athletes / coaches across all levels.
We host concession stands at all home games
We are having a bake sale today at a Raymour & Flanigan Furniture location in Saratoga Springs. For our outreach efforts for this particular cause, Raymour & Flannigan will also donate $500 to our fundraising campaign.
We have a “Cash Calendar Fundraiser” – community members pick a number from the calendar and donate that particular amount of money. All donors of each athlete’s “Cash Calendar” are then put in a raffle drawing to win a $50 gift card.
On October 5th, we will be hosting our “pink match” at Hudson Falls HIgh School. Lots of varied opportunities to donate to the cause including basket raffles, concession stands, monetary donations, etc. All uniforms will be pink and members of the community are encouraged to wear pink for our “pink out” night.
On October 7th, we will be participating in the annual power of pink volleyball tournament at Queensbury High School. The Hudson Falls Volleyball program raised $7,000 last season for the same cause!!
We would also like to give back to our local community this season by making donations to the “Living For Mia” cause as well as the “Goodness Strong” cause. September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we would like to recognize, remember, and honor those that we’ve known and lost right here in our district.
