Beginning in early March, students at Forest Brook, Pines and Bretton Woods elementary schools in the Hauppauge School District brought in donations, placing their money into individual buckets labeled with the teacher they’d like to see get “pied” on Pi Day.
On March 14, the results were finally pooled as each building held a highly anticipated, energy-charged assembly. Students loudly cheered with excitement as their teachers and even their respective principals received faces full of whipped cream for a good cause. The money raised ahead of Pi Day was donated to the Rachel Quinn Children’s Foundation.
The Rachel Quinn Children’s Foundation is dedicated to the well-being and educational enrichment of children in the Long Island area as well as spreading, inspiring and rewarding the characteristics of kindness that Rachel Quinn embodied. Rachel Quinn was an elementary school teacher in Hauppauge. In total, all three elementary schools raised $4,109.19 for the foundation.
Through the Math Honor Society, Hauppauge High School celebrated Pi Day with a “pie in the face” fundraiser in support of the Defeat DIPG Foundation and in particular, a subset of the organization, Callie’s Crew.
DIPG is a type of brain tumor, typically found in children. Callie Montera, the daughter of Hauppauge High School counselor Danielle Montera, passed away from this disease. In her honor, the Math Honor Society raised $450 through their Pi Day event on March 13. To date, the Math Honor Society Pi Day fundraisers have raised $1,500 for the organization.
Overall, Hauppauge students, faculty and staff had a great time on Pi Day, while raising money for fantastic causes.
