The Hockey Fights Cancer event holds deep personal significance for the Kelleher family. Last year, Brennan Kelleher and his brother teamed up to honor their mother, a colorectal cancer survivor, and their aunt, who lost her battle with metastatic breast cancer. Combining their passion for hockey with a commitment to giving back, they launched the inaugural Hockey Fights Cancer game.
Their first event was a resounding success, raising over $7,500 for the American Cancer Society and McCarthy House, the hospice facility where their aunt spent her final days. The event received significant attention, with a well-received article helping to spread awareness of their mission. The overwhelming community support reinforced the impact of their efforts.
This year, the brothers organized their second annual game, and while donations are still being collected, they have already surpassed $6,000. Fundraising efforts included raffles, bake sales, and online contributions, with players who received jerseys making donations to McCarthy House in memory of their aunt.
Beyond the financial contributions, the event fostered a sense of solidarity within the community. Many team members and community members shared their personal experiences with cancer, highlighting that the event was about more than just hockey—it was about connection, remembrance, and support.
One of the most touching aspects of the event was their aunt’s involvement before her passing. Although she was unable to attend their state championship hockey game due to her illness, she remained their biggest supporter. When the brothers shared their fundraising plans with her, she eagerly contributed by donating hockey jerseys, making the initiative feel even more meaningful.
As Brennan prepares to head to college next year, he remains dedicated to ensuring the event continues with the help of his mother. His brother, now at the University of Tampa, continues to contribute in any way he can. Their hope is that the high school and community will embrace this event as an annual tradition that brings people together for a worthy cause.
The continued support for the initiative has been remarkable, with a journalist who covered the first event following up again this year to check on its progress. This ongoing engagement underscores the event’s growing impact.
Additionally, Brennan has been inspired by Team Up 4 Community through his involvement with the MIAA Student Advisory Council. Working with Phil Napolitano and learning about various student-led initiatives across the state has further motivated him. Seeing the difference that students and teams are making in their communities reinforces the power of collective action and service.
The Kelleher family’s dedication to Hockey Fights Cancer exemplifies the profound impact that student-athletes can have when they combine their passion with a cause close to their hearts.
