The fourth and fifth grade student council at East Islip’s John F. Kennedy Elementary School recently ran a food drive to support the Suffolk County Women’s Alliance to End Food Insecurity’s Thanksgiving food distribution event. The event annually feeds thousands of families in Suffolk County. One of the founding members of SCWAEFI is JFK alumna Emily Blair.
The members of the student council organized, promoted and made important decisions about the food collection, and JFK students and families donated almost 1,000 food items.
“It was clear from the student council’s first meeting that all of the students were interested in helping their community and school,” adviser Heather Sini said. “This was a perfect event for them to relate to Emily and realize that even at a young age, they can make a difference.”
“It was fun because we got to count up and organize the food, and it all goes to an organization that’s helping families who really need it,” student Stella Ribando said.
“It was so fabulous for our students to remind the school over the announcements to bring in donations,” Principal Deborah Smith said. “The response was amazing! I am so proud of our student council members who did such an important act of kindness for so many.”
