Friday night was about more than just basketball—it was about uniting for a cause. The Kenmore East and Grand Island Varsity Girls and Boys Basketball teams took to the court not only to compete but to raise awareness and support for ALS.
The event held deep personal significance, as the mother-in-law of one of the organizers—and aunt of Kristin Wegrzyn, Grand Island’s girls varsity coach—is currently battling ALS. In her honor, the teams dedicated the night to her and all those affected by this devastating disease.
To support the cause, donations were collected at the entrance, and proceeds from the concession stand were also donated. Players and coaches wore special shirts for the game, and in a heartfelt moment, a commemorative basketball signed by every player and coach was presented to Laurie Wegrzyn as a token of love and support.
The success of the event was made possible by the collaboration and dedication of both schools’ athletic directors, along with Kenmore East girls coach Sean Kibrick and Grand Island boys coach Chris Simpson. Their leadership and commitment helped create an unforgettable night that went beyond the game, reinforcing the power of sports in bringing communities together for meaningful causes.
This event was a powerful reminder that teamwork extends beyond the court, and the impact of these athletes reaches far beyond the final buzzer.
