Five seniors from the Manhasset High School boys’ lacrosse team took it upon themselves to make a difference in their community by organizing a winter clothing drive for the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. What started as an idea quickly turned into a month-long effort that saw the players collecting and donating approximately 15 large leaf bags filled with clothing to those in need.
Seniors Kyle Melkonian, Brady Baulch, Chris McGowan, Keith Lam, and Brian Reilly spearheaded the initiative, demonstrating leadership and compassion beyond the lacrosse field. Over four weeks, they went door-to-door, spreading awareness and collecting clothing donations. To expand their reach, they purchased large cardboard boxes and placed them in high-traffic locations, including Publicans Restaurant, St. Mary’s Church, and Raindew Department Store. The response was overwhelming, with boxes needing to be emptied twice a week due to the influx of donations. Additionally, the team leveraged social media to spread the word, ensuring the drive’s success.
While the clothing drive was entirely student-led, Manhasset Lacrosse Coach Joe Fallon provided support by coordinating with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. After connecting with program director Bailey, he helped facilitate the drop-off of donations once the drive concluded. “My involvement as a coach was minimal,” Fallon said. “This was all the boys and their commitment to making an impact.”
The players reflected on their experience, highlighting what the initiative meant to them:
Kyle Melkonian expressed his hope of establishing a tradition for future senior players. “I wanted to create a tradition that future players can continue. Giving back is something we all can contribute to, and it’s important to set an example for the younger players.”
Keith Lam was inspired by the winter workouts with his team. “I realized how cold it was outside, and while we were in full sweats, many people lacked warm clothing. That’s what motivated us to start this drive.”
Brian Reilly emphasized the role of the Manhasset community in their success. “Growing up in Manhasset has taught me the importance of giving back, and the generosity of our community throughout this process has meant a lot to us.”
Brady Baulch shared how the experience changed his perspective. “This drive showed me how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. It has made me more grateful for what I have and motivated me to help whenever I can.”
Chris McGowan discovered the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless through social media and knew they had to take action. “Seeing the incredible work they do, I knew we needed to get involved. It was truly fulfilling to be part of such a meaningful effort.”
This clothing drive was more than just an act of service—it was a testament to the leadership and generosity of Manhasset’s senior lacrosse players. Their efforts not only provided essential items for those in need but also set a precedent for future athletes to use their platform for good.
