This past Tuesday, Schreiber High School hosted a clinic to introduce students from the Invest program to the exciting world of flag football. As the school’s girls’ flag football program enters its second year, the coaches and athletes wanted to share their enthusiasm for the sport with the Invest students, helping them experience the fun and opportunities that flag football offers.
The clinic was a huge success. Jerseys were provided to make the students feel like part of the team, and they participated in various drills to get a feel for the game. The highlight of the event came when Invest students paired up with varsity players to throw, catch, and run routes together. For many varsity athletes, this was a special moment, as they were able to pass on their love for the game, recalling how many of their own football journeys started with a simple game of catch.
The clinic wasn’t just about teaching the sport—it was about promoting inclusion, opportunity, and building memories through a game that is accessible to all. Following the clinic, two Invest students had the honor of serving as honorary captains during Schreiber’s game against Massapequa. They participated in pregame warm-ups, walked out for the coin toss, and experienced the excitement of the game from the sidelines.
Off the field, the varsity girls continued to make an impact. During the week, they sold Huddle Up for Autism Awareness T-shirts during their free periods, raising $1,000 for Be The Best Sport, a local nonprofit that supports adaptive sports and socialization programs for individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
As Schreiber’s flag football program continues to grow, the school remains committed to creating new opportunities for all students, especially those who might not have had access to them before. The success of this clinic is just the beginning of a movement that is bringing the entire school community together through the sport of flag football.
