Trevor Spano, a 12-year-old student at Somers Middle School, has profoundly impacted the lives of many within the Somers community. Diagnosed at a young age with Mitochondrial DNA Deletion Syndrome, Trevor has faced numerous challenges with remarkable resilience, determination, and good humor. Over the years, he has endured hospitalizations, including an extended stay at Boston Children’s Hospital, and is currently battling another health issue that has persisted for nearly two months. His ongoing health struggles have placed a significant emotional, physical, and financial burden on his family, resulting in extended absences from work and school and mounting medical expenses.
Many of Somers’ student-athletes know Trevor personally, seeing him daily at school. When the opportunity arose to offer support, the middle school staff quickly circulated a flyer and email calling for assistance. Thanks to the efforts of Stephanie Burke and Kira Markowitz, a plan was put into action to rally around Trevor and his family.
The Somers JV and Varsity softball teams, known for their commitment to helping those in need, eagerly embraced the opportunity to show their support. Each player proudly placed a sticker on the back of their helmet in honor of Trevor, a small but powerful symbol of solidarity and strength. Witnessing the girls’ excitement and pride in supporting Trevor was a moving reminder of the deep sense of community that defines Somers athletics.
Under the guidance of Somers Varsity Assistant Coach Kim Astrologo, the teams have dedicated the remainder of their season to Trevor, hoping to inspire him and bring some positivity during this difficult time. The players and coaches alike look forward to the day when Trevor will be able to attend a game in person and witness firsthand the community’s unwavering support.
The Somers softball program continues to exemplify what it means to be more than a team — they are a family, united not just by their love of the game, but by their commitment to lifting up those who need it most.
