During Homecoming Week, the spirit of friendly competition between Warroad and neighboring Roseau extended beyond the field — and straight into the hearts of both communities.
Led by the Minnesota Honor Society and Student Council, Warroad students launched a Homecoming Week Cereal Drive Challenge against their rivals in Roseau. With both schools celebrating Homecoming the same week, the timing was perfect for a community-wide showdown for a great cause.
In just one week, the two schools collected an incredible 3,245 boxes of cereal to help local families in need. Warroad contributed 1,543 boxes, while Roseau narrowly edged them out with 1,702 — earning Warroad the honor of wearing green the following Friday!
The impact, however, went far beyond the friendly rivalry. The majority of Warroad’s donations went to the Warroad Food Shelf, while about 100 boxes were shared with the Grygla Food Shelf, whose community had joined in during the volleyball Homecoming game. Another 100 boxes were donated to the school’s backpack program, helping ensure that students in need have food to take home each week.
To keep spirits high and the competition fierce, students updated totals daily on social media — a move that boosted excitement and helped drive donations even higher.
The following week, MHS students personally delivered the cereal to the Warroad Food Shelf, where staff expressed heartfelt gratitude for such a generous outpouring of community support.
This fun and impactful challenge proved once again that when schools and communities come together — even as rivals — everyone wins.
