Cape Ann League Unites for 5th Annual CAL vs. Cancer Awareness Game

For the past four years, the Cape Ann League has united student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans across its member schools around a shared mission: supporting the American Cancer Society and standing together against a common enemy — cancer. What began as an awareness initiative has grown into a meaningful annual event that reflects the league’s commitment to service, compassion, and community impact. The CAL vs. Cancer game served as a reminder that while teams may compete fiercely on the field or court, they come together off it with a shared purpose. Through visible displays of support, community engagement, and collective participation, the event highlighted the power of athletics to raise awareness and inspire action beyond competition. By continuing this tradition into its fifth year, Lynnfield Athletics and the Cape Ann League demonstrate that sports can be a platform for unity, leadership, and meaningful change. CAL vs. Cancer remains a testament to what is possible when an entire league rallies behind a cause greater than the game. The Cape Ann League vs. Cancer event is a league-wide, one-night charity basketball initiative uniting all CAL schools in support of the American Cancer Society. Schools across the league participate simultaneously, working together to raise both awareness and funds in the fight against cancer. Each host school collects donations at the gate, with proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society. Prior to tip-off, players, coaches, and game officials take part in a unified opening ceremony, holding “I Play For” signs to honor loved ones and recognize those impacted by cancer. Across the league, approximately 500 student-athletes and coaches participate in this event, demonstrating the Cape Ann League’s shared commitment to community, teamwork, and making a meaningful difference beyond the court.
