About:
The town’s Youth and Recreation Department hosts an eight-week winter basketball program for kindergarten students known as Kindergarten Hoopsters. Each season concludes with a special Pancake Breakfast Banquet — and that’s where Saugus High School basketball steps in.
Each year, senior members of the high school basketball program volunteer to serve breakfast to the young participants. What may seem like a simple act carries a deeper meaning for the program. As one senior class prepares to graduate, they have the opportunity to connect with the very beginning of the basketball journey in Saugus.
When seniors serve as mentors to kindergartners, it highlights the tradition and continuity of the program. The youngest players get to see firsthand what lies ahead — the leadership, teamwork, and pride that come with being part of the Saugus basketball family. At the same time, the seniors are reminded of where they started and the responsibility they carry as role models.
Saugus High School Athletics recently brought generations together through this special service event led by coaches and senior basketball players at the Kindergarten Hoopsters Breakfast Banquet. Student-athletes and coaches volunteered their time to create a fun and welcoming experience for the community’s youngest players. The morning was about more than pancakes — it was about connection, mentorship, and community pride.
By stepping into leadership roles off the court, senior players modeled sportsmanship, responsibility, and the importance of giving back. Events like this demonstrate how high school athletics can strengthen community bonds while reinforcing that being part of a program means supporting those who come next.
