Bellport High School varsity football and volleyball players recently traded their day off from school for a day of meaningful community service, volunteering together at Lighthouse Mission in Bellport.

Student-athletes from both teams joined forces to help clean the facility and sort and organize donated items, supporting the mission’s efforts to serve individuals and families in the local community.

Building Compassion Through Community Service

The volunteer initiative was organized through Ambassadors of Compassion, a program led at Bellport High School by math teacher Eva Moriarty.

The program encourages varsity student-athletes to develop empathy, compassion, and meaningful connections with their peers through hands-on service opportunities.

By bringing together athletes from different sports, the initiative helps students recognize that teamwork and leadership extend far beyond the playing field.

Athletes Unite to Make a Difference

During their visit to Lighthouse Mission, Bellport’s football and volleyball players worked side by side, completing important tasks to help keep the facility organized and ready to serve the community.

The experience also gave the athletes an opportunity to connect with classmates from another team while putting the values of service, cooperation, and compassion into action.

Teamwork Beyond the Game

Bellport’s commitment to community service demonstrates the positive influence student-athletes can have when they come together for a shared purpose.

Through the Ambassadors of Compassion program, these young leaders are learning that making a difference doesn’t always require a big event. Sometimes, giving your time, lending a helping hand, and showing compassion can have a lasting impact.
