Prior to the start of the 2014-15 academic year, Big South student-athletes, coaches and administrators continued their involvement with the Conference’s mission of “Developing Leaders Through Athletics” by spending time and serving their communities in a variety of ways. Below is a closer look at these efforts.
Charleston Southern Volleyball Volunteers at Lowcountry Food Bank
The Charleston Southern volleyball team took time out of their preseason schedule to volunteer at the Lowcountry Food Bank August 13. The Bucs helped the organization pack food into backpacks and make boxes for distribution throughout the Lowcountry.
The Bucs primarily helped in the process of packing and loading bags for the Lowcountry Food Bank’s Backpack Buddies program, which provides nutritious, high quality food and easy-to-prepare meals for children at risk for weekend hunger.
CSU also spent time packing, moving and loading boxes that the Food Bank distributes throughout the community to schools and churches. These boxes are used for various programs including the Kids Café and the School Pantry programs throughout the Lowcountry.

Liberty Student-Athletes Take Part in Character Camp
Liberty student-athletes, coaches and staff came together in July to bring summer camp to local elementary school students in the Lynchburg area.
An organization known as Dream Again Life, along with Liberty’s Academic Affairs Office, held its annual “Keeping it Moving with Character Camp” for Heritage Elementary School. Held on Liberty’s campus for the first time since its inception, the camp gave local area youth the opportunity to experience the university’s athletics facilities through a number of interactive stations.
Campers bounced around from station to station, learning techniques about football, soccer and track, while also taking part in other games and team building activities. On the final day of the three-day event, campers were treated to a carnival and kick ball game at the Liberty Baseball Stadium.
